“Army@Love (DC/Vertigo), another venture by Rick Veitch, who has consistently written and drawn (”cartooned”) some of the most adventurous comics around. I just read, for the first time, his Can’t Get No, a wracking reaction to 9/11 coupled to a satire of shallow pop culture performed entirely in pantomime with the text accompaniment of a prose poem that gave emotive voice to the feelings the pictures might have aroused. The poetry was sometimes pretentious, but the plan — vaguely echoing the narrative import of the pictures in parallel text — was high adventure in making comics.”
