Fresh out of Kubert School, I was hustling my portfolio around Manhattan looking for gigs. One regular stop was at the HIGH TIMES offices, where I was always trying to convince Art Editor Jeff Tiedrich that they ought to run more comics in the magazine. All it ever came to was this illustration, commissioned for a news story they ran on the NASA SHUTTLE. Note that even back then it was well known how fragile the heat shield tiles were on the orbiter.
Never got the original art back from those stoners. Here’s a scan of the printed page (HIGH TIMES November 1980). Script, logo, lettering and art by Rick Veitch. Pen, ink and airbrush.
