Them Thar Pencils

I should have mentioned when I posted the inks to this commission that Superman and Batman are © and ® DC Comics (except maybe for the part of Superman that the courts have restored to the estate of Jerome Siegel.)

Rick, do pencil that tightly all of the time, or because it was a commission you wanted the buyer to see the whole picture? Are your pencils tight for Erskine but lose for yourself?

Tightness of pencils depends on the look I’m after. ARMY@LOVE was penciled as tight as this commission. A book like BRAT PACK, which wanted a greasier feel, is inked over loose pencils.

Are you using much blue pencil, or are you doing a rough first and light boxing it? Sometimes the image is in my head and it travels down to the page, but sometimes the power of the sketch and the time I put in is necessary.

I work everything out on tracing paper first. If I’m lucky it takes two sheets to get it right, but oftentimes (especially with a cover) it takes more. Then I lightbox it onto the board with a 6H pencil and do the final with a 3h.

Thanks Rick, it’s great to hear how someone else does it. Especially you formally school’d fellas.
