My Fingerprints Are All Over This
This is my painting for the cover to RARE BIT FIENDS #19, a mix of watercolor, gauche and colored pencil. The little symbol in the fingerprint was this thing that spontaneously popped up in my dreams while I was working on the book. I later found something similar in a symbol book that had been left on the wall of a neolithic cave in Germany.
It,s like a seasons greeting to the brain of someone
who recently read THE COLLECTED RARE BIT FIENDS.
The against the grain marks look like they are
threatening the character into holding his arms up.
It also reminds me of the cover art of some of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books.

That is awesome! The color. The texture. The design. Amazing.
I always loved this cover. and this series.
it’s a sad thing the market place has no room to support good old floppy alt comics. Rare Bit Fiends and JIM were some my my favorites from the 90s. sure we have blogs and deluxe edition hard back collections now. but it’s just not the same. I think it was the little self contained doses of comics served with an individual color front and back cover and a refreshing side of letters pages and creator recommendations. so appetizing.
